How to Make a Simple Edison-Style Socket

Introduction

Making your own Edison-style light bulb socket is a fun DIY project that allows you to create a vintage look in your home. Edison-style bulbs have visible filaments that create a beautiful, nostalgic glow. While these bulbs can be purchased, making your own socket allows you to customize the lamp to your exact needs and preferences. With some basic materials and tools, I’ll walk you through the steps to make your own simple Edison socket from start to finish.

Materials Needed

To make your Edison socket, you will need:

The most important component is the porcelain lamp socket. This is what creates the connection for the Edison bulb. You'll also need basic electrical wiring supplies like lamp cord, wire nuts, and heat shrink tubing.

For the base, you can use a small wood block or wood dowel. Sandpaper, wood stain, and polyurethane allow you to smooth and finish the base. And you'll need some basic tools like a drill, pliers, and hot glue gun.

Steps to Make the Edison Socket

Step 1: Drill the Wood Base

Take your wood base and mark the center point. Using a drill bit that matches the diameter of the lamp socket, drill a hole approximately 1 inch deep into the base. Test that the socket fits snugly in the hole. You may need to widen the hole slightly with sandpaper until the socket can set firmly in place.

Step 2: Stain and Seal the Base

Using 180 grit sandpaper, smooth out the wood base. Wipe away any wood dust. Apply your desired stain color and let it dry completely. Then apply a coat of polyurethane sealer and let it dry again. This gives a nice polished finish to the base.

Step 3: Wire the Socket

Take your porcelain lamp socket and attach the neutral wire from the lamp cord to the silver screw terminal. Attach the hot wire to the brass screw terminal. Secure the wires by tightening the screws firmly with pliers.

Step 4: Add Heat Shrink and Attach Cord

Slide a small piece of heat shrink tubing over the wire connections and heat it with a hair dryer or heat gun to seal the wires. Thread the lamp cord through the bottom of the wood base so that about 6 inches comes out the bottom.

Step 5: Anchor the Socket in the Base

Apply a ring of hot glue around the top edge of the lamp socket. Insert the socket into the hole in the base so the glue adheres and holds it firmly in place. Allow the hot glue to fully cool and harden.

Step 6: Add Finishing Touches

Using wood glue, attach a wood dowel horizontally into the side of the base to create a vintage handle. Let the glue dry completely. Add felt pads to the bottom to protect your furniture.

That's it, you now have a fully functioning Edison-style light bulb socket! Just screw in a vintage bulb and enjoy the warm glow. Customize your lamp by choosing different wood types, stains, handles, or base shapes. Have fun designing vintage lighting for your home!
