How to Build a Simple Homemade Tesla Coil That Actually Works
Building a homemade Tesla coil can be a fun and educational project. With some basic materials and a bit of electrical know-how, you can construct a working Tesla coil that produces lightning-like electrical discharges. Planning Your Tesla Coil

Determine the Size

Assembling the Base Components

Obtain a High Voltage Capacitor
- A high voltage capacitor connected to the primary coil provides the reactive power needed for resonance. Use a 0.25-0.5 uF capacitor rated for at least 15,000 volts.
Build an Interrupter/Spark Gap
- The spark gap rapidly interrupts the current to generate high voltage oscillations. Make one using two pieces of copper or brass and adjust the gap spacing to about 1/16".
Add Safety Features
- Install a current limiting resistor and fusion-resistant wiring to prevent overloads. Use a grounding rod for discharging current to earth safely.
Mount Components
- Mount all the components securely to a plywood base or other suitable non-conductive support structure for stability.
Testing and Operating Your Homemade Tesla Coil

Check Wiring Connections
