Constructing the Electronic Spoon
With the parts gathered, we can start building. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Prepare the Spoon
Use a drill to make two small holes in the bowl of the spoon - one near the top, one near the bottom. Take care not to crack the bowl. These holes will allow us to mount the motor.
Step 2: Mount the Motor
Place a small dab of hot glue in the bowl. Press the motor in place aligned with the holes. The wires should face into the bowl. Add more glue around the base to hold it firmly.
Step 3: Solder the Switch
Solder about 3 inches of wire to each leg of the push button switch. This will extend the leads so we can mount the switch on the handle.
Step 4: Mount the Switch
Pick a spot on the handle to mount the switch. Drill a hole just large enough for the switch body to fit through. Pass the switch through and hot glue it in place.
Step 5: Connect Wires
Cut two 3" lengths of wire. Solder one end of each wire to the motor terminals. Solder the other ends to the switch terminals.
Step 6: Install Battery Holder
Hot glue the 3V coin cell battery holder to the back of the spoon handle. Solder its wires to the switch wires.
Step 7: Test
Insert battery into holder. Press the button switch. The motor should spin! Carefully add hot glue over the wire solder points to insulate them.
We now have a functioning electronic spoon!
Using Your Electronic Spoon
Operating your new gadget is easy:
- Press the button switch as you lower the spoon into your soup. This will start the mixing motion.
- The motor will run as long as the button is pressed. Release to stop.
- Each time you dip the spoon for more soup, press the button again to mix that bite.
- When finished, remove the battery to turn it off completely.
Be sure to only press the button while the spoon is submerged, to avoid flinging soup. Avoid extremely hot soups as the components are not waterproof. Wash the bowl carefully by hand.
