How to Wire a Ceiling Fan with Only One Hot Wire

Installing a ceiling fan can seem daunting, but it's actually a straightforward process if you know what you're doing. The tricky part comes when you open the ceiling junction box and realize there's only one hot wire available. But there's no need to call an electrician! With a little clever wiring, you can install your ceiling fan using just the one hot wire in the ceiling. Here's how I do it safely and up to code.

Things You'll Need

Before getting started, make sure you have all of the necessary materials:

• Ceiling fan - Pick one out ahead of time that meets your needs and style. They come in all sorts of designs these days.
• Cable ripper - To strip the existing wires in the ceiling junction box.
• Voltage tester - To make sure the power is off at the breaker before working. Safety first!
• Wire nuts - To connect the wires. Get the correct size for the gauge of wire you're using.
• Electrical tape - To cover splices and prevent shorts.
• Ladder - To reach the ceiling safely. Use it even if you're just barely tall enough. Don't risk falling.
• Phillips screwdriver - For installing the mounting bracket and wire connections.
• Pliers - For bending, cutting, and manipulating wires.

Turn Off Power at the Breaker

Before doing any work, shut off the power to the ceiling light at the breaker box. Make sure everyone in the house knows not to turn the breaker back on while you're working!

To confirm the power is off, use a voltage tester on the wires in the ceiling box. When it doesn't light up, you know you can safely work on the wiring.

Identify the Existing Wires

In the ceiling junction box, you'll see a hot wire (typically black), a neutral wire (typically white), and a ground wire (bare copper).

With only one hot wire available, the neutral is missing. You'll need to run a new neutral from the ceiling box to the fan.

Install the Mounting Bracket

With the power off, start by securely installing the ceiling fan bracket. This provides a stable, permanent base to hang the fan from.

Use the provided screws and anchors designed for your ceiling type (drywall, wood, etc). Attach to ceiling joists whenever possible for the most holding power.

Run New Neutral and Ground Wires

From the ceiling box, feed a new 14/2 cable through the bracket and out of the box. You'll use this to provide the missing neutral and an additional ground.

Leave plenty of extra wire in the box to make connections. Don't trim excess yet.

Connect the Wires

• Connect the hot wire from the ceiling to the black fan wire using a wire nut.

Tuck Wires into the Box

Before mounting the fan, neatly tuck all wires into the ceiling box. Make sure wire nuts are turned upward to avoid slipping off.

No bare wire should be exposed. Also keep wires away from the bracket screws to prevent pinching and damage.

Mount the Ceiling Fan

Time for the fun part - installing your beautiful new ceiling fan!

Slide the fan assembly onto the mounting bracket. Be careful not to pinch or damage wires. Install the provided screws and washers to hold the fan securely in place on the bracket.

Complete the Installation

Almost done! Just a couple more steps:

• Install the fan blades according to the manufacturer's instructions.
• Attach the light fixture and globe if included with your fan.
• Turn the power back on at the breaker box.
• Do a final test to make sure everything works properly before finishing up.
